Plot Summary
Fast-paced, great chemistry, strong girls
The Autumn Ballad is a gripping romantic drama with strong male and female leads. Interestingly, the plot is almost divided into 3 parts: Part 1 is the two main leads meeting and hating each other, and they are still forced to work together to survive. The middle part is where the leads start to warm up and find each other with many sweet moments together. The last part is where they fall in love and fight their enemies.
Qiu Yan (Qiao Xin) is not an ordinary girl, having gone through many hardships and sorrows growing up. She is strong, active and knows how to protect herself without letting fate define her. During her troubles, she meets Liang Yi (Jeremy Tsui), a cold-hearted detective. At first, Liang Yi thinks Qiu Yan is a gold digger, using her dirty scheme to land a big fish for marriage. After working with her to solve various criminal cases, Liang Yi changes his view of Qiu Yen and she starts to attract him. Qiu Yan, on the other hand, didn’t like Liang Yi at first because she thought he was cruel and heartless, but after working with him for a while, she realized that it was just a cover he put up to destroy others. Underneath that surface was a kind-hearted person who had helped her time and time again. She started to take an interest in him. Their interactions for the first 20 episodes or so really felt like a rom-com with the insults and insults that were exchanged, which was really fun to watch.
As they started to develop feelings for each other, a few episodes were devoted to showing their love, and this excited many viewers. After 20 episodes or so, it was an open fact that they were a couple without declaring their feelings for each other, but they knew each other’s hearts. They are an almost unbreakable mystery and a huge conspiracy while saving each other’s lives. For many couples, it is satisfying to see a couple who can read each other’s minds so well, and they give the audience many sweet moments. Their chemistry.
I didn’t like Jeremy Tsui when I first saw his work in Legend of the Phoenix. His pale face, his smile made me uncomfortable, and I didn’t even know he wasn’t an antagonist. But in this film, I found his acting to be very believable, with his subtle expressions and overall charm. I especially liked the scene when Qiu Yan told him that she was the girl he saved years ago. His face was priceless. Like many viewers, I was impressed and impressed by her deep voice, although some viewers criticized her lack of clarity in her dialogue. This is my first time watching Xiao Xin and I found her to be beautiful and natural. I really enjoyed watching her, especially when she started arguing with Liang Yi. Her appearance and emotions were cute and believable. The other characters were equally well executed by the cast.
My Verdict
I really enjoyed this drama from the beginning to the first 20 episodes. Although I liked their romance in the later episodes, the story started to lose its charm in the later episodes. There were still twists and turns, but no surprises anymore as things became predictable. A lot of incomprehensible logic (like how can someone work so closely with someone who just killed someone who was like your brother?) starts to come into play. There are a lot of logical fallacies throughout the story - working with someone who killed someone you love. For the later episodes, Qiu Yan seems to be smarter than Liang Yi, who has been a skilled detective for years, and he is supposed to be the best, able to see the bigger picture before anyone else can. So it seems like a change in the character's abilities. Like the lazy writing of many Chinese historical drama endings, this one doesn't escape the same fate. Some prominent characters perish unnecessarily. Although there are many unexpected twists and turns, I found the final twist to be a character's life that was unnecessary. It left many questions in my mind.
That said, I really enjoyed this story and the couple who are both willing and believing in each other. These two lovebirds are like a couple who always get along. It's really nice to watch this kind of relationship. I also find Qiu Yan very inspiring as she doesn't leave her life to her fate, she always reminds the audience.
