Plot Summary

For me, a good drama doesn’t depend on the big names or the director’s reputation, no matter how complicated the plot is. As long as the plot is coherent, logical, the actors are hot, the costumes are mismatched, the main character is lovable, and the characters’ struggles and conflicts capture my heart and emotions, it’s a good one. The Letter from the Cloud is one of those.

I don’t know what the title of the drama is all about, which for me remains a mystery after the end of the drama. However, this is a story about a power struggle for the throne involving a girl whose entire family was wrongly executed by the emperor and a royal prince who is trying to find his missing mother. They meet and fall in love, even though the girl has just married the prince’s cousin, who has been a girl disguised as a man since birth. I love all the relationships between the characters here, including the second lover. The villains are out in the open from the beginning, and all the evil plans are planted by the antagonists from the beginning to the end.

Qi Zhang (Xie Binbin) inherited the title of Prince Jing when his father passed away. He stands in the northwest of the country guarding the border. Smart and a great swordsman, he is a loner and distrustful person. He is determined to find his missing mother, so he returns to the capital to his maternal grandmother's house to track down information from her. Here, he falls in love with a woman who he initially chooses to work as his spy in his maternal grandmother's family.

I liked Xie Binbin from the first time I saw him in Qing Qing Zi Jin. He exudes a pure, innocent and genuine quality that attracts the audience. Here, as the perfect Prince Jing, Xie Binbin plays the role. His style and behavior are perfect and endearing. His uncertainty, dismay, jealousy, joy, determination and more are handled appropriately without being overbearing and still manage to move the audience. Great acting here.

After her entire family was abused, Gu Yi (Wu Jiayi) was adopted by a "Jianghu" doctor and renamed Shen Yu. Due to her horrific childhood experiences, Shen Yu became obsessed with money and would do anything for it. In order to get it, she married into the Zhou family and crossed paths with Qi Zhang and was hired to be his spy to uncover secrets related to him in the Zhou family. Shen Yu is smart, quick-witted, and streetwise. With her amazing skills in medicine, she later put them to good use in her life-saving and investigative work.

I really loved Shen Yu's character here, and Wu Jiayi played it well. Her Shen Yu is genuine and human, cheeky and yet relatable, and not too proud to admit her mistakes and show her vulnerability to the one she trusts. The way she keeps getting the upper hand with Qi Zhang is hilarious and well-executed, and the way she makes him jealous is a joy to watch. Wu Jiayi is so natural. With her big watery eyes, pouty lips, and a smile that is so infectious, she captures the heart. Viewers can empathize with her zeal to seek justice for her family and her resignation when justice is not served. Wu Jiayi fulfills her role perfectly.

I also want to applaud the entire cast, including the actors who play the antagonists. The villains are being treated so realistically that the viewer wants to rip out the villains’ hearts for the heinous crimes they committed. The cross-dressing is believable, as actor Fu Jing (Zhou Yue) makes the viewer look like a sick man with a soft voice. Great acting here.
