Plot Summary
I see haters at work trying to smear this drama. Not only here, I'm seeing hate videos on Youtube too. Unfortunately, this is becoming more prevalent in the world of Chinese dramas, where producers are fined to pay or else their dramas will be smeared on social media. Apparently, the producers of the drama didn't give in to the smearing, so mistakes were made or mistakes that were common in dramas and mostly ignored were exaggerated with this one. The attack was spread elsewhere by the Navy and was picked up and spread further by the opposing fans of the stars or their pairings. Innocent viewers erupted in outrage and were supported by smear campaigns.
But don't let the haters stop you from enjoying this delightful rom-com.
Only For Love stars Bai Lu as Zheng Shuyi, a beautiful, lovable, smart, but rather eccentric reporter for a financial magazine. Dylan Wang plays Shi Yan, a mysterious young CEO who asks Shuyi for an interview to publicize the vision of his venture capital firm to help startups get off the ground. Shuyi has just caught her boyfriend cheating on her with a woman she mistook for Shi Yan’s niece. Her boyfriend has left her for a woman who promised to help him with his career. With her pride in her heart, Shuyi decides to flirt with Shi Yan, seemingly to get back at her ex-boyfriend, and allow her to land a series of interviews with the highly-coveted bachelor CEO. Their constant meetings lead to romance. But how will Shi Yan feel when he learns the truth about Shuyi’s reasons for pursuing him?
Shuyi is not your typical Chinese drama heroine. She excels at her job. But beyond that, she is completely self-conscious. Self-centered and shameless. Shi Yan’s pursuit of her is hilarious, showcasing her seductive nature. But is it all an act? Can this seductive woman fall in love with a wild animal?
Shi Yan has been hailed on social media as the Chinese Mr. Darcy for his warm and friendly demeanor, as well as the handsome figure he cuts, especially in riding clothes. But he also has his own charm. When he laughs at Shu Yi’s foolish attempts at seduction, or when he looks at her with such love and sexual tension that he always has a hard time keeping his cool, your heart can’t help but dance with excitement.
There may be some cultural challenges that may affect the understanding of the story by non-Chinese viewers. For example, the joke about the cake at Uncle Shi Yan's party begins with Shuyi misreading "making love" to her ex-boyfriend's question about what she's doing. But when she notices Shi Yan watching her compose her text, she changes the text to "making cake." The confusion arises because some of the text doesn't have Chinese abbreviations. Moreover, if you don't understand something in the story, try to join the discussion on social media and ask away.
Overall, the story is really gripping and captivating. It starts off lighthearted, but the characters turn out to be more than your typical rom-com characters. These are multi-dimensional characters who are not all good, but not all bad either. In short, they are human. Breaking down the characters and what makes them tick is fundamental to enjoying this enjoyable story.
