A dark, painful story told in a humorous way
“Back From the Brink” is a dark, painful story told in a humorous and humorous way. The spirit dragon Tian Yao (Hou Minghao aka Neo Hou) is thrust into a marriage that he broke up with. Since then, he has become an ordinary person wandering the world trying to find his body parts. On his painful journey, he meets a woman named Yan Hui (Zhou Ye) who falls deeply in love with him and promises to help him in his quest to return to his old form again.
The tone of the story is one of playing with modern vitality. But at the same time, it is also deadly serious when the antagonists appear. The series has created perhaps two of the most deadly antagonists in the Cultivator Sisters. Their obsession and cruelty make the audience gnash their teeth and shed tears, wishing them a miserable death.
Tian Yao is a spirit dragon, a pure person with no evil thoughts. He has a kind heart and struggles with the mission of protecting the world. His journey and determination to find his body parts are painful and touching. When he returns to his dragon form, he becomes the strongest creature there is. I like Hou Minghao's portrayal of Tian Yao here, even though the dragon's CGI is not well done. Hou Minghao is handsome and cute, with an innocent youthful appearance. Some viewers have commented that his acting skills are still lacking. I see that he has improved a lot since "A Girl Like Me" when I fell in love with this young actor. Here, her acting is believable and her character is very endearing. As Tian Yao, her lack of words really moved the audience as she endured her pain silently.
Yan Hui, a disciple of the Cultivator Sect, is a lucky girl who never holds a grudge. Her good nature wins her many friends and helps her become very strong in the end, despite having a weak heart from birth. Zhou Ye has a beautiful figure and acting skills. Her crying scenes are heart-warming and believable. Most importantly, she has great chemistry with Hou Minghao as they make a very compatible pair.
Many viewers curse Bai Xiaosheng (Wang Yilun aka Riley Wang) as a shadow demon because he comes between Tian Yao and Yan Hui in the love triangle. I love Bai Xiaosheng's character and Wang Yilun gave a great performance. The two lovers are so fun and sweet, creating a great bond for Yan Hui and Tian Yao. The OSTs are beautiful and calming. Listen to them if you love music.
